Foundations A1
French uses 26 letters, the same as English, but five of them carry accents and two carry a cedilla. Knowing these from day one saves a lot of guessing later.
Foundations — The French alphabet, accents, vowels and pronunciation rules.
Only five letters ever take an accent in French, and each accent changes the sound: é (like "ay"), è (like "eh"), ê (like "air"), à (always "ah"), ù (always "oo"). Anything else with a mark above it — â, î, ô, û — is only a spelling habit, never a sound change. Learn it, do not pronounce it.
ç turns c into an s sound. It appears before a, o and u, where a plain c would be a hard /k/: ça, garçon, reçu. It never appears before e or i, because c is already soft there.
ç अक्षर c को "स" की ध्वनि दे देता है। यह a, o और u से पहले आता है, जहाँ साधारण c कठोर "क" होती है: ça, garçon, reçu। e और i से पहले यह कभी नहीं आता, क्योंकि वहाँ c पहले से ही मृदु होती है।
Five vowel sounds carry French: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/. Unlike English, French vowels are short and pure — the vowel keeps its sound from start to end of the syllable. That is why "je" and "jeu" sound identical, and why a final consonant is usually silent: "chat" is "sha", not "chat".
फ़्रेंच में पाँच स्वर ध्वनियाँ होती हैं: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/। अंग्रेज़ी के उलट, फ़्रेंच स्वर छोटे और शुद्ध होते हैं — अक्षर के शुरू से अंत तक स्वर एक जैसा रहता है। इसीलिए "je" और "jeu" एक जैसे सुनाई देते हैं, और इसीलिए अंतिम व्यंजन प्रायः नहीं बोला जाता: "chat" का उच्चारण "sha" है, "chat" नहीं।
The letter e is pronounced differently depending on the accent: été (ay), père (air), grâce (ass). French spelling tells you which sound to use — that is the job of the accent.
अक्षर e का उच्चारण मात्रा के अनुसार बदलता है: été (ay), père (air), grâce (ass)। फ़्रेंच वर्तनी आपको बता देती है कि कौन सी ध्वनि लेनी है — मात्रा का काम यही है।
An English speaker pronounces the last letter of nearly every French word. French does not: nation is "nay-syon", not "nay-shun". Only a, e, o, s, x and z are pronounced at the end. Pronouncing extra consonants is the single most recognisable mistake of a beginner.
अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला हर फ़्रेंच शब्द का अंतिम अक्षर बोल देता है। फ़्रेंच ऐसा नहीं करता: nation का उच्चारण "nay-syon" है, "nay-shun" नहीं। केवल a, e, o, s, x और z अंत में बोले जाते हैं। अनावश्यक व्यंजन बोलना शुरुआती सीखने वाले की सबसे पहचानी जाने वाली गलती है।
Spell words out loud once and you will already hear whether a vowel is right. Consonants follow fairly fixed rules; vowels do not. Ten minutes of reading French words aloud will fix your ear faster than any grammar lesson.
शब्दों को एक बार बोलकर लिखिए और आपको तुरंत पता चल जाएगा कि स्वर सही है या नहीं। व्यंजन के नियम काफ़ी तय होते हैं, स्वर के नहीं। फ़्रेंच शब्दों को ज़ोर से पढ़ने के दस मिनट आपके कान को किसी भी व्याकरण पाठ से ज़्यादा तेज़ी से साध लेते हैं।
