Verbs & Conjugation A1
The two most irregular verbs in French. They are worth memorising before anything else, because être also builds the past of every movement verb and avoir builds the past of everything else.
Verbs & Conjugation — Verb groups, stem changes, the passe compose and irregular verbs.
je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Note that tu es and vous êtes both end in -s — the same sound as the 3rd person plural.
je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont। ध्यान दीजिए कि tu es और vous हैं दोनों के अंत में -s है — बिल्कुल तीसरे पुरुष बहुवचन जैसी ही ध्वनि।
j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Four of the six forms are the same word; learn them as a pattern, not as six items.
j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont। छह में से चार रूप एक ही शब्द हैं; इन्हें छह अलग चीज़ों की तरह नहीं, एक ढर्रे की तरह सीखिए।
For identity, origin, profession and the like, être simply is the verb: Je suis étudiant, Elle est française, Ils sont à Delhi. There is no "a" anywhere — that is an English habit with no French equivalent.
पहचान, मूल, पेशा और ऐसी बातों के लिए être सीधे क्रिया है: Je suis étudiant, Elle est française, Ils sont à Delhi। कहीं भी "a" नहीं आता — यह अंग्रेज़ी की आदत है, फ़्रेंच में इसका कोई रूप नहीं।
For possession and most actions, avoir is the verb: J'ai un frère, Elle a un travail, Ils ont deux enfants. Notice avoir agrees with the thing, not the person.
स्वामित्व और अधिकांश क्रियाओं के लिए avoir क्रिया है: J'ai un frère, Elle a un travail, Ils ont deux enfants। ध्यान दीजिए कि avoir व्यक्ति से नहीं, वस्तु से मेल खाता है।
The two commonest A1 errors: Je suis un étudiant is fine but Je suis avoir vingt ans is not, and *Elle a France is not a way to say where she is from. In French, being is être, and having is avoir — never both in one clause.
A1 की दो सबसे आम गलतियाँ: *Je suis un étudiant सही है पर *Je suis avoir vingt ans गलत, और *Elle a France यह नहीं है कि वह कहाँ से है। फ़्रेंच में होना être है और रखना avoir — एक ही वाक्य में दोनों कभी नहीं।
être is almost always followed by a noun, an age or a nationality; avoir almost always by a noun or a number. Practise with the twenty nouns you actually need — votre nom, mon père, mon âge, français, twenty ans — and the verbs teach themselves.
être के बाद प्रायः संज्ञा, आयु या राष्ट्रवंश आता है; avoir के बाद प्रायः संज्ञा या संख्या। उन बीस संज्ञाओं के साथ अभ्यास कीजिए जो आपको सच में चाहिए — votre nom, mon père, mon âge, français, vingt ans — और क्रियाएँ खुद सिख जाएँगी।
