Tenses & Aspect A2
This is the single hardest decision in French, and almost every learner gets it wrong in the same direction: they narrate the weather in the passé composé.
Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.
If you can put "tous les jours", "souvent" or "chaque fois" in front of it without changing the meaning, it is imparfait. Otherwise it is passé composé. Je mangeais du pain = I ate bread as a habit. J'ai mangé du pain = I ate some bread, once.
अगर आप उसके आगे "tous les jours", "souvent" या "chaque fois" लगा सकें और अर्थ न बदले, तो वह imparfait है। वरना passé composé। Je mangeais du pain = मैं रोज़ ब्रेड खाता था। J'ai mangé du pain = मैंने एक बार ब्रेड खाया।
Passé composé needs a boundary: an event that starts and stops, often with a marker — hier, ce matin, en 2020, pendant deux heures. Imparfait has no boundary and cannot take those markers. Il pleuvait hier soir is wrong; Il a plu hier soir is right.
Passé को एक सीमा चाहिए: वह घटना जो शुरू होकर रुकती है, प्रायः किसी चिह्न के साथ — hier, ce matin, en 2020, pendant deux heures। Imparfait की कोई सीमा नहीं होती और वह इन चिह्नों को नहीं ले सकता। *Il pleuvait hier soir गलत है; *Il a plu hier soir सही है।
Je lisais quand il est entré. The reading is the background (imparfait), the arrival is the event that interrupted it (passé composé). Same sentence, two tenses, one meaning — and that combination is worth real marks in written DELF and TCF.
Je lisais quand il est entré। पढ़ना पृष्ठभूमि है (imparfait), और आना वह घटना है जिसने उसे रोक दिया (passé composé)। एक ही वाक्य, दो काल, एक अर्थ — और यही संयोजन लिखित DELF तथा TCF में असली अंक दिलाता है।
J'ai mangé une pomme = I ate an apple (once). Je mangeais des pommes = I used to eat apples (regularly). The English translation barely changes, but French changes verb entirely, and DELF marks exactly this.
J'ai mangé une pomme = मैंने एक सेब खाया (एक बार)। Je mangeais des pommes = मैं सेब खाता था (नियमित रूप से)। अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद में ज़्यादा फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता, पर फ़्रेंच पूरी क्रिया बदल देता है, और DELF ठीक यही जाँचता है।
The classic error: *Il a fait beau, je suis allé au parc, j'ai mangé une glace. All three should be imparfait except the ice cream: Il faisait beau, je suis allé au parc, j'ai mangé une glace.
आम त्रुटि: *Il a fait beau, je suis allé au parc, j'ai mangé une glace। तीनों में से पहला दो imparfait होने चाहिए: Il faisait beau, je suis allé au parc, j'ai mangé une glace।
A learner who thinks in English and translates picks the tense by the English tense, which is why the English past makes passé composé feel safe. Think in French first — was it repeated, or did it happen once? — and the tense follows on its own.
जो शिक्षार्थी अंग्रेज़ी में सोचकर अनुवाद करता है, वह अंग्रेज़ी के काल से फ़रक चुनता है, इसीलिए अंग्रेज़ी का past उसे passé composé सुरक्षित महसूस कराता है। पहले फ़्रेंच में सोचिए — दोहराया या एक बार हुआ? — काल अपने आप चुन लेगा।
Q1. Complétez : Hier, je ___ (manger) une pizza.
पूरा कीजिए: Hier, je ___ (manger) une pizza.
Réponse : ai mangé
💡 Hier date l'action : événement unique et terminé, donc passé composé : j'ai mangé une pizza.
Q2. Complétez : Je ___ quand le téléphone a sonné.
पूरा कीजिए: Je ___ quand le téléphone a sonné.
Réponse : dormais
💡 L'action en cours, le décor, est à l'imparfait, et l'action qui l'interrompt au passé composé : je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.
Q3. Complétez : Elle était malade, ___ elle est allée au médecin.
पूरा कीजिए: Elle était malade, ___ elle est allée au médecin.
Réponse : donc
💡 L'imparfait pose l'état, le passé composé donne la conséquence : elle était malade DONC elle est allée se faire soigner.
