L'élision

Pronouns A1

A final vowel is dropped before another vowel. English has the same instinct in "the orange", but French writes it as an apostrophe — and omits it far more often.

Pronouns — Subject, object, possessive, demonstrative and relative pronouns.

Leçon

Where it happens

Only before a vowel or a silent h, and only for the words that can contract: le/la → l', je → j', me/te/se → m'/t'/s', de → d', que → qu', ne → n', si → s' (only before il or ils), ce → c' (only before a vowel).

The written outcome

l' + école = l'école. j' + aime = j'aime. d' + où = d'où. qu' + est-ce = qu'est-ce. n' + est = n'est pas. The apostrophe replaces the missing letter — it is not decoration.

l' + école = l'école। j' + aime = j'aime। d' + où = d'où। qu' + est-ce = qu'est-ce। n' + est = n'est pas।

Elision in a whole sentence

J'ai un ami qui habite à l'école près de l'hôpital. Notice three elisions in one line, and no hyphen anywhere.

J'ai un ami qui habite à l'école près de l'hôpital।

Forgetting it under pressure

Learners remember the rule and still write "je aime" in a timed exercise, because the eye is ahead of the knowledge. The fix is mechanical: when you type je, the next letter you type is always an apostrophe. Practise typing, not just writing.

What the exam tests

This is the easiest mark available in DELF A1 writing: a missing apostrophe is a visible error on every single sentence. Twenty minutes of elision drilling is worth more than twenty minutes of vocabulary.
