L'imparfait

Tenses & Aspect A2

The imperfect describes: a scene, a state, a habit. It has no beginning and no end, which is exactly why it cannot be used for anything that finished.

Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.

How it is formed

Group 1 and group 3 add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient to the stem: je parlais, nous parlions, ils parlaient. Group 2 uses -issais: je finissais. être and avoir are irregular: j'étais, j'avais.

The three things it is for

DESCRIPTION of a scene: "La ville était belle." HABIT in the past: "Je jouais au cricket quand j'étais enfant." BACKGROUND behind another action: "Il pleuvait, je marchais vers l'école." All three are states, not events.

With être, the imperfect is the verb of state

Every être construction almost prefers the imperfect, because these sentences describe rather than narrate: J'étais fatigué, Nous étions à la maison, Elle était malade. The passé composé appears only when the state is clearly finished: J'ai été malade pendant une semaine.

A whole description in one sentence

Using it for finished actions

Hier, j'ai mangé une pizza — is correct. But J'ai mangé une pizza tous les jours quand j'étais petit is wrong: the habit is imparfait. The test is simple — if it repeated, or if it had no clear start and end, it is imperfect.

What the exam tests

The DELF A2 oral task 1 is explicitly a description, and the imperfect is the tense that earns the marks. A candidate who narrates a childhood memory entirely in passé composé loses points for scope, not for accuracy.
