Tenses & Aspect A2
When a past action depends on another past action, the tenses move forward. This is what separates a strung-together list of sentences from actual narrative.
Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.
passé composé becomes imparfait: "Il est arrivé, puis il a dormi." → "Il est arrivé, puis il a dormi." becomes "Il est arrivé puis il dormait." imparfait becomes plus-que-parfait: "Je dormais" → "Je dormais quand il est arrivé" becomes "Je dormais quand il était arrivé."
passé composé imparfait बन जाता है: "Il est arrivé, puis il a dormi." → "Il est arrivé puis il dormait." Imparfait plus-que-parfait बन जाता है: "Je dormais" → "Je dormais quand il était arrivé."
avoir or être in the imperfect, plus the past participle: j'avais mangé, elle était partie. In the negative, ne sits between them: je n'avais pas mangé.
avoir या être अपूर्ण भूतकाल में, फिर पूर्व काल का रूप: j'avais mangé, elle était partie। नकारात्मक में ne दोनों के बीच बैठता है: je n'avais pas mangé।
Quand je suis arrivé, il pleuvait déjà. Les rues étaient vides parce que tout le monde était rentré. Later: "Je n'ai rien vu" — the imperfect is now the background, so the negative becomes the plus-que-parfait.
Quand je suis arrivé, il pleuvait déjà. Les rues étaient vides parce que tout le monde était rentré। और बाद में: "Je n'ai rien vu" — अब imperfect पृष्ठभूमि है, इसलिए नकारात्मक plus-que-parfait बन जाता है।
Quand je suis arrivé, il a plu is not wrong — it is simply flatter. Il est parti quand j'ai mangé is genuinely wrong when the two events are meant as background and foreground. The test: if the earlier action is only setting the scene, it must be imperfect.
*Quand je suis arrivé, il a plu गलत नहीं है — बस अधिक सपाट है। *Il est parti quand j'ai mangé तब सचमुच गलत है जब दोनों घटनाएँ पृष्ठभूमि और मुख्य घटना के रूप में कही जानी हों। परीक्षण: यदि पहली क्रिया केवल दृश्य बना रही है, तो वह imparfant होनी चाहिए।
TCF expression orale task 2 is a three-minute narrative and it is marked on exactly this: the ability to move a speaker between the three past tenses at will. Ten minutes of practice here is worth more than an hour of vocabulary at this level.
पूरा कीजिए: Elle a dit qu'elle ___ (être) fatiguée.
Réponse : était
💡 Le présent de la citation devient imparfait après un verbe de parole au passé : « je suis fatiguée » → elle a dit qu'elle était fatiguée.
Q3. Complétez : Il m'a dit qu'il ___ le lendemain.
पूरा कीजिए: Il m'a dit qu'il ___ le lendemain.
Réponse : partirait
💡 Après un verbe de parole au passé, le futur de la citation devient conditionnel : il a dit qu'il partirait.
