La phrase complexe

Sentence Structure B2

At B2 a sentence carries several verbs with different subjects and different times. Keeping track of who does what is the whole skill.

The pronouns that carry the subject forward

When a second verb shares the subject of the first, French uses a pronoun rather than repeating the noun: "Marie a lu le rapport et elle l'a résumé." Repeating "Marie" is possible but heavy; dropping the pronoun entirely and writing "et a résumé" is WRONG, because French requires a subject, and there is no pro-drop. This is the rule an English speaker breaks first and hardest.

जब दूसरी क्रिया का कर्ता पहली जैसा ही हो, फ़्रेंच संज्ञा दोहराने के बजाय सर्वनाम लेता है: "Marie a lu le rapport et elle l'a résumé." "Marie" दोहराना संभव है पर भारी; सर्वनाम पूरी तरह छोड़कर "et a résumé" लिखना ग़लत है, क्योंकि फ़्रेंच में कर्ता ज़रूरी है और वह छोड़ा नहीं जा सकता।

Keeping the tense chain straight

In a long sentence the tenses must stay in the right relationship to each other, not to the moment of speaking. "Je pensais que tu viendrais" keeps the imperfect because the thinking is past, and the conditional because the arrival is later than the thinking. Moving either verb to the present breaks the perspective the whole sentence was built on.

लंबे वाक्य में काल एक-दूसरे के संबंध में सही रहनी चाहिए, बोलने के समय के संबंध में नहीं। "Je pensais que tu viendrais" में imparfait बना रहता है क्योंकि सोचना बीता है, और conditionnel क्योंकि आना सोचने के बाद का है। दोनों में से कोई भी वाक्य वर्तमान में आता है तो पूरी वृष्टि टूट जाती है।

Four verbs, four subjects, one sentence

Bien qu'il pleuvît, les étudiants qui avaient préparé l'examen sont arrivés, mais leur professeur, qui les attendait depuis une heure, leur a dit qu'il reportait l'épreuve. Four verbs, four subjects, and a concessive clause that opens the sentence and a relative clause that closes it.

Bien qu'il pleuvît, les étudiants qui avaient préparé l'examen sont arrivés, mais leur professeur, qui les attendait depuis une heure, leur a dit qu'il reportait l'épreuve. चार क्रियाएँ, चार कर्ता, शुरू में एक स्वीकारवाचक उपवाक्य और अंत में एक सम्बंधवाचक उपवाक्य।

Forgetting that French has no zero subject

"Marie a lu le rapport et a résumé." This is English pro-drop, and in French it is a fragment with no subject, not a shortened sentence. The same applies inside a relative clause: "la femme que travaille à l'hôpital" is impossible. French allows omitting a subject ONLY in three fixed impersonal constructions: il pleut, il faut, il y a.

"Marie a lu le rapport et a résumé." यह अंग्रेज़ी का pro-drop है, और फ़्रेंच में यह कर्ता-रहित टुकड़ा है, छोटा वाक्य नहीं। सम्बंधवाचक उपवाक्य में भी यही लागू होता है: "la femme que travaille à l'hôpital" असंभव है। फ़्रेंच में कर्ता केवल तीन निश्चित अव्यक्त ढाँचों में हटाया जा सकता है: il pleut, il faut, il y a।

How this is examined

TCF expression écrite asks for 150-200 words on a social or economic subject, which naturally produces compound sentences. Candidates are not penalised for complexity, only for a subject that disappears. Two examiners read for exactly that: does the writer still know who is doing what at the end of the fourth clause.

TCF expression écrite में सामाजिक या आर्थिक विषय पर 150-200 शब्द माँगे जाते हैं, जो स्वाभाविक रूप से जटिल वाक्य देता है। परीक्षक जटिलता के लिए अंक नहीं काटते, केवल ग़ायब कर्ता के लिए काटते हैं। दो परीक्षक यही देखते हैं: क्या लेखक को चौथे उपवाक्य के अंत तक भी पता है कि कौन क्या कर रहा है।
