La place des adjectifs

Adjectives & Adverbs A1

Most adjectives go after the noun, but a small group goes before it — and when both happen, the noun gets sandwiched between them.

Adjectives & Adverbs — Where adjectives go, agreement, and the position of adverbs.

Leçon

The default is after the noun

adjective + opinion, emotion or a quality you are reporting: un jardin beau, une robe élégante, une question importante. This is also where très, trop and vraiment go: une très belle maison.

विशेषण + राय, भावना, या जिस गुण की आप सूचना दे रहे हैं: un jardin beau, une robe élégante, une question importante। यहीं पर très, trop और vraiment भी आते हैं: une très belle maison।

The ones that come first

A small group describing a fixed, objective quality goes before the noun: beau, bon, mauvais, grand, gros, jeune, vieux, joli, nouveau, petit, haut, long, meilleur. So un beau jardin and un petit vieux garage. The meaning is a statement of fact, not of taste.

एक छोटा समूह जो निश्चित, वस्तुनिष्ठ गुण बताता है, संज्ञा से पहले आता है: beau, bon, mauvais, grand, gros, jeune, vieux, joli, nouveau, petit, haut, long, meilleur। इसलिए un beau jardin और un petit vieux garage। अर्थ स्वाद का नहीं, तथ्य का कथन है।

When both appear, the noun goes in the middle

If one adjective goes before and another after, the noun is placed between them: un petit vieux garage, une belle grande maison. Both adjectives agree with the noun as usual, regardless of where they stand.

यदि एक विशेषण पहले और दूसरा बाद आए, तो संज्ञा दोनों के बीच रखी जाती है: un petit vieux garage, une belle grande maison। दोनों विशेषण अपनी-अपनी जगह होने के बावजूद सामान्य रूप से संज्ञा से मेल खाते हैं।

The same adjective, two meanings

un homme grand = a tall man (a fact). un grand homme = a great man (a judgement). Position is not decoration in French; it changes what the sentence claims.

un homme grand = लंबा आदमी (एक तथ्य)। un grand homme = महान आदमी (एक निर्णय)। फ़्रेंच में जगह सजावट नहीं है; वह बदल देती है कि वाक्य क्या दावा कर रहा है।

Following English order everywhere

English says "a big red car", so a learner writes *une grande voiture rouge. French is usually the other way round: une voiture rouge grande. The two adjectives can even swap places, and French does not mind: une voiture grande rouge.

अंग्रेज़ी कहती है "a big red car", इसलिए शिक्षार्थी *une grande voiture rouge लिखता है। फ़्रेंच प्रायः उल्टा है: une voiture rouge grande। दोनों विशेषण तो जगह बदल भी सकते हैं और फ़्रेंच को कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता: une voiture grande rouge।

Read with the ear, not the rule

Position is a matter of register and nuance, not logic, so it resists rules. After a few weeks of reading French, the right position arrives before you can explain why. Until then, copy what you see in real sentences.

जगह का मामला तर्क का नहीं, रुट और सूक्ष्मता का है, इसलिए यह नियम का विरोध करती है। कुछ हफ़्ते फ़्रेंच पढ़ने के बाद सही जगह उससे पहले आ जाती है कि आप कारण बता सकें। तब तक असली वाक्यों में जो दिखे, वही नकल कीजिए।
