La voix passive

Verbs & Conjugation B2

French uses the passive far more than English does, and it is the normal way to write a formal report, a recipe, a rule or a news lead.

How it is formed, in every tense

être + participe passé, with être conjugated and the participle agreeing with the subject: La loi a été votée. Les lettres sont arrivées. La réunion sera annulée. The past participle carries the tense and être carries the person, exactly as in the active voice — nothing about the tense system changes, only which verb does the conjugating.

être + participe passé, जिसमें être का रूप बदलता है और participe passé कर्ता से मेल खाता है: La loi a été votée. Les lettres sont arrivées. La réunion sera annulée. Participe passé काल दिखाता है और être व्यक्ति दिखाता है — व active voice जैसा ही, बस क्रिया बदल गई है।

When French prefers the passive and English does not

FOUR uses where English keeps the active: a rule or a law, a recipe, a process, an action where the agent is obvious or irrelevant. "On a construit le pont en 1900" is normal and "Le pont a été construit en 1900" is also normal, but English would strongly prefer the first. THE agent matters, keep the active: "Le ministre a annoncé la réforme" is better than a passive, because naming the minister is the point.

चार ऐसे प्रयोग जहाँ अंग्रेज़ी active रखती है: नियम या क़ानून, रेसिपी, कोई प्रक्रिया, या वह क्रिया जिसमें कर्ता स्पष्ट या अप्रासंगिक है। "On a construit le pont en 1900" सामान्य है और "Le pont a été construit en 1900" भी सामान्य है, पर अंग्रेज़ी पहली को बहुत पसंद करेगी। जब कर्ता मायने रखता है, active रखिए: "Le ministre a annoncé la réforme" बेहतर है, क्योंकि मंत्री का नाम लेना ही मक़सद है।

Transformed into the passive

On publie le rapport demain → Le rapport sera publié demain. Il a construit ce mur → Ce mur a été construit par lui. On a ouvert la enquête → L'enquête a été ouverte. The agent is not always stated, and in French the omission is normal, not lazy — but when you do name it, par lui follows the participle.

On publie le rapport demain से Le rapport sera publié demain. Il a construit ce mur से Ce mur a été construit par lui. एक छोटी बात: Ce mur a été construit. कर्ता हमेशा नहीं बताया जाता, और फ़्रेंच में यह छोड़ देना सामान्य बात है, आलस नहीं।

Two errors that betray a beginner instantly

First, swapping the auxiliary: "La loi a été votée" is correct, "La loi a voté" is not — that gives the law the power to vote, which is a category mistake rather than a passive error. Second, letting the agent of two chained passives disappear: "Il a été décidé que la loi serait appliquée" leaves two passive verbs with two different subjects and no anchor. When two passives share one agent, say who it is: "Le conseil a décidé que la loi serait appliquée."

Questions d’entraînement

Q1. Translate into French: This house was built in 1900.

फ़्रेंच में अनुवाद कीजिए: This house was built in 1900.

सुधारिए: « Le crime a été commis pour le suspect. »

Réponse : Le crime a été commis par le suspect

💡 L'agent du passif est introduit par par (ou par de après un verbe d'état : aimé de tous). pour signalerait un bénéficiaire, pas l'auteur de l'action.
