Le futur simple

Tenses & Aspect A2

Almost mechanical to form, and far more neutral than aller + infinitive. Using it makes a learner sound considerably more confident.

How it is formed

Group 1 and 2: the whole infinitive plus -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. je parlerai, je finirai. Group 3: the stem plus r-ai, r-as, r-a, r-ons, r-ez, r-ont. je vendrai, vous vendrez.

समूह 1 और 2: पूरा अनंत रूप + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. je parlerai, je finirai। 3: stem + r-ai, r-as, r-a, r-ons, r-ez, r-ont. je vendrai, vous vendrez।

Three uses

Prediction: "Il neigera demain." A promise or plan: "Je t'appellerai ce soir." Neutral politeness, which is the everyday reason: "Je voudrais un café." That last one is the conditionnel, and it is the single politest thing a learner can say.

Near future or simple future

Je vais appeler = I am going to call, said just before dialling. J'appellerai = I will call, said earlier, as an intention or a statement. In a shop, "Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît" is polite; "Je vais prendre un café" is neutral and a little abrupt.

Building it from "nous"

The je column is the engine, exactly as in the subjunctive. parlerons would give *je parlerons. Learn the six futures of one verb together and the error never appears: je parlerai, tu parleras, il parlera, nous parlerons, vous parlerez, ils parleront.

Use it when you are not sure

In French the future is also the mood of uncertainty, which is why "Il pleut" (it is raining, a fact) sounds more definite than "Il pleut peut-être" and why people say "Je ne sais pas quand il arrivera" rather than a guess. The future hedges without needing any extra word.
