Nouns, Articles & Gender A1
Every French noun is masculine or feminine, and the choice decides the article, the adjective endings and the past participle. Gender is not always logical — but it is always consistent.
Nouns, Articles & Gender — Every noun has a gender, and the article must agree with it.
Most -tion, -té, -ette, -euse and -rice nouns are feminine; most -age, -ment, -eau and -isme nouns are masculine. But endings decide only about 80% of the time, so learn each noun WITH its article rather than as a bare word.
अधिकतर -tion, -té, -ette, -euse और -rice वाली संज्ञाएँ स्त्रीलिंग होती हैं; अधिकतर -age, -ment, -eau और -isme वाली पुल्लिंग। पर अंत केवल लगभग 80% मामलों में निर्णय करते हैं, इसलिए हर संज्ञा को आर्टिकल सहित सीखें, अकेली नहीं।
Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant or in -eau: le chat, le fromage, le bureau. Feminine nouns usually end in a vowel: la table, la maison, la classe. A noun ending in -e is nearly always masculine — the famous rule is "le Catalyst Exception".
पुल्लिंग संज्ञाएँ प्रायः व्यंजन या -eau पर समाप्त होती हैं: le chat, le fromage, le bureau। स्त्रीलिंग संज्ञाएँ प्रायः स्वर पर: la table, la maison, la classe। -e पर समाप्त संज्ञा लगभग हमेशा पुल्लिंग होती है — प्रसिद्ध नियम "le Catalyst Exception" याद रखें।
Say the noun by itself, then say "un" or "une" before it. If it sounds right, you have the gender. "un chat", "une table", "un livre". Never guess an article in a live conversation — use "une…" plus the noun and repair it afterwards.
संज्ञा को अकेले बोलिए, फिर उसके आगे "un" या "une" लगाकर बोलिए। जो सही लगे, वही लिंग है। "un chat", "une table", "un livre"। बातचीत में आर्टिकल का अनुमान लगाकर मत लगाइए — "une…" लगाकर बोलिए और बाद में सुधार लीजिए।
The same adjective changes with the noun it describes: le petit chat, la petite maison, les petits enfants, les petites filles. In speech the ending is usually not pronounced, but it is always written.
एक ही विशेषण उस संज्ञा के अनुसार बदलता है जिसका वर्णन कर रहा है: le petit chat, la petite maison, les petits enfants, les petites filles। बोलते समय यह अंत प्रायः सुनाई नहीं देता, पर हमेशा लिखा जाता है।
English gives no gender at all, so speakers reach for a familiar word: la problem, un book. Two memories fix this: un problème and une solution for abstract nouns, and un livre / une livre for the ones that trick everyone. Write nouns with their article from the very first lesson.
अंग्रेज़ी में लिंग होता ही नहीं, इसलिए लोग जाने-पहचाने शब्द से लिंग उधार ले लेते हैं: *la problem, *un book। दो यादें इसे ठीक कर देती हैं: अमूर्त संज्ञाओं के लिए un problème और une solution, और उनके लिए un livre / une livre जो सबको उलझाते हैं। पहले पाठ से ही संज्ञाएँ आर्टिकल सहित लिखिए।
A word learned with three others sticks far better: le pain, le fromage, le vin, le pomme de terre. The gender arrives with the group, which is exactly how French children learn it. Quiz yourself on the group, never on one stray noun.
तीन और शब्दों के साथ सीखा गया शब्द कहीं बेहतर याद रहता है: le pain, le fromage, le vin, la pomme de terre। समूह के साथ लिंग भी आ जाता है — ठीक वैसे ही जैसे फ़्रेंच बच्चे सीखते हैं। खुद को समूह से ही पूछिए, कभी एक अकेले शब्द से नहीं।
