Le passé composé — introduction

Tenses & Aspect A1

French almost never uses the simple past in speech. It uses avoir or être plus the past participle instead, so this is the tense you need first, not the textbook one.

Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.

The formula

auxiliary in the present tense + past participle. With avoir: j'ai mangé, tu as mangé, il a mangé. With être: je suis allé, tu es allé, il est allé.

सहायक क्रिया वर्तमान काल में + पूर्व काल का रूप। avoir के साथ: j'ai mangé, tu as mangé, il a mangé। être के साथ: je suis allé, tu es allé, il est allé।

Which auxiliary

Most verbs take avoir. Only the verbs of movement and change of state take être: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, rester, tomber, passer, devenir, revenir, naître, mourir. Every pronominal verb also takes être.

अधिकांश क्रियाएँ avoir लेती हैं। केवल गति और परिवर्तन वाली क्रियाएँ être लेती हैं: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, rester, tomber, passer, devenir, revenir, naître, mourir। हर प्रतिवाचक क्रिया भी être लेती है।

The three past participles you can form yourself

Group 1: stem + é — parlé, mangé. Group 2: stem + i — fini. Group 3: stem + u — vendu. Everything else has to be learned: fait, pris, mis, eu, été, dit, écrit, lu, vu, pris.

समूह 1: stem + é — parlé, mangé। समूह 2: stem + i — fini। समूह 3: stem + u — vendu। बाकी सब याद करने पड़ते हैं: fait, pris, mis, eu, été, dit, écrit, lu, vu, pris।

Negation splits the compound in half

ne … pas does nothing new: it simply puts itself between the auxiliary and the participle. Je n'ai pas mangé. Il n'est pas venu. The two halves of the compound stay exactly where they were.

ne … pas कुछ नया नहीं करता: यह सीधे सहायक क्रिया और पूर्व काल रूप के बीच में आ जाता है। Je n'ai pas mangé. Il n'est pas venu। संयुक्त रूप के दोनों हिस्से वहीं रहते हैं जहाँ थे।

With être, the participle agrees

il est allé, elle est allée, ils sont allés, elles sont allées. With avoir nothing agrees: elle a mangé, not *elle a mangée. The agreement follows the auxiliary, not the meaning.

il est allé, elle est allée, ils sont allés, elles sont allées। avoir के साथ कुछ भी मेल नहीं खाता: elle a mangé, *elle a mangée नहीं। मेल खाने का निर्णय अर्थ से नहीं, सहायक क्रिया से होता है।

Two verbs that change their auxiliary

monter and descendre are on the être list, but only when they mean movement. With a direct object they take avoir: je suis monté (I went up) but j'ai monté la valise (I brought the suitcase up). Sortir behaves the same way: je suis sorti, but j'ai sorti le chien.

monter और descendr être की सूची में हैं, पर केवल जब उनका अर्थ गति हो। सीधा वस्तु के साथ आने पर ये avoir लेती हैं: je suis monté (मैं ऊपर गया) पर j'ai monté la valise (मैं सामान ऊपर ले आया)। Sortir भी वैसा ही है: je suis sorti, पर j'ai sorti le chien।

Using être with everything

Je suis mangé is the first error every learner makes. The second is J'ai allé, which needs être because aller is a movement verb. The rule is worth writing on the first page of your notebook and checking against every sentence for a month.

*Je suis mangé हर शिक्षार्थी की पहली त्रुटि है। दूसरी है *J'ai allé, जिसे être चाहिए क्योंकि aller गति-क्रिया है। यह नियम नोटबुक के पहले पन्ने पर लिख लीजिए और एक महीने तक हर वाक्य की जाँच कीजिए।

What the exam tests

DELF A1 and TCF both test the passé composé in the very first oral task. It is the tense that decides whether a simple spoken sentence is judged correct, so it earns more marks per minute of practice than any other tense at A1.

DELF A1 और TCF दोनों पहले ही मौखिक कार्य में passé composé परखते हैं। यही काल तय करता है कि एक साधारण बोला गया वाक्य सही ठहरता है या नहीं, इसलिए A1 में किसी भी अन्य काल से ज़्यादा अंक प्रति मिनट यह देता है।
