Group 2 verbs take -iss- in the middle. Group 3 verbs put an s in front of everything. Both are small tables, and both have a handful of verbs that refuse to follow them.
Verbs & Conjugation — Verb groups, stem changes, the passe compose and irregular verbs.
finir → fin. The stem is joined to iss before the endings: je finis, nous finissons, ils finissent. The imperfect follows the same idea: je finissais, nous finissions.

vendre → vend. The first two persons and the third singular take an extra s, the rest take nothing: je vends, tu vends, il vend, nous vendons, ils vendent.

A dozen verbs share the vendre shape and change only their own stem: attendre, perdre, répondre, rendre, entendre, descendre, défendre, dépendre, suspendre, prescrire. Learn them as one list and one table covers all of them.

Group 2 needs three s in nous finissons. Group 3 needs none: nous vendons. If you find yourself adding -iss- to a -re verb, or adding an s to a -ir verb, you have mixed the tables.

partir, sortir, dormir, mourir and repentir end in -ir but do not take -iss-. They are j'pars, nous partons, je dormais, nous dormons. Detect them by this test: if the stem already ends in a vowel, -iss- never appears.

Twelve hard verbs feels impossible; one hard verb feels manageable and is then forgotten. Group the irregulars the way the tables do — the -iss- family together, the -re family together — and each group becomes one memory instead of twenty.

💡 prendre prend un d au pluriel et perd le r devant -ez : vous prenez.
