Foundations A1
An accent does two jobs: it changes the sound, and it shows where a word is stressed. Getting both right is the difference between being understood and being guessed.
Foundations — The French alphabet, accents, vowels and pronunciation rules.
é is the common one and almost always sounds like "ay" in a closed syllable: café, lycée. ù is always "oo" and usually sits on a silent consonant: où, reçu. à is always "ah": là, voilà. è and ê both carry an open "eh" sound: père, forêt.
é सबसे आम है और बंद अक्षर-समूह में लगभग हमेशा "ay" जैसा बोला जाता है: café, lycée। ù हमेशा "oo" है और प्रायः मौन व्यंजन पर लगा होता है: où, reçu। à हमेशा "ah" है: là, voilà। è और ê दोनों खुली "eh" ध्वनि देते हैं: père, forêt।
This is the single biggest difference from English. In the two-syllable word cinéma, the stress is on the second half: ci-NÉ-ma. Say it any other way and you sound like you are guessing. Longer words keep the same rule — Evaluation gives stress to "a": é-va-lua-TION.
यह अंग्रेज़ी से सबसे बड़ा अंतर है। दो-अक्षर वाले शब्द cinéma में दबाव दूसरे भाग पर है: ci-NÉ-ma। किसी और तरह बोलें तो लगता है कि आप अनुमान लगा रहे हैं। लंबे शब्दों में भी यही नियम है — évaluation में दबाव "a" पर है: é-va-lua-TION।
a → à (ah) before a consonant, â (ah) as a spelling mark only. e → é (ay), è (eh), ê (air), ë used only in borrowed words like Noël. o → ô (oh). u → ù (oo), û (oo). Knowing that é and è never sound alike is worth more than memorizing any list.
a → à (ah) व्यंजन से पहले, â (ah) केवल वर्तनी चिह्न। e → é (ay), è (eh), ê (air), ë केवल उधार लिए गए शब्दों में जैसे Noël। o → ô (oh)। u → ù (oo), û (oo)। यह जानना कि é और è कभी एक जैसे नहीं बोले जाते, किसी भी सूची याद करने से ज़्यादा उपयोगी है।
All four of these begin with the letter e and all four are pronounced differently: été (ay), et (uh), ère (air), eau (oh). Spelling it out loud is the only reliable way to check.
नीचे के चारों शब्द e से शुरू होते हैं और चारों का उच्चारण अलग है: été (ay), et (uh), ère (air), eau (oh)। ज़ोर से लिखकर देखना ही एकमात्र भरोसेमंद तरीका है।
An Indian speaker of English tends to say CA-fi-ne instead of ci-NÉ-ma, and ho-TEL instead of ho-TE-l. The rule never has an exception: the last spoken syllable takes the stress. French listeners forgive many mistakes but not this one.
अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला भारतीय CA-fi-ne कहने की प्रवृत्ति रखता है, ci-NÉ-ma के बजाय, और ho-TEL कहता है, ho-TE-l के बजाय। इस नियम का कोई अपवाद नहीं है: अंतिम बोला जाने वाला अक्षर-समूह ही दबाव लेता है। फ़्रेंच बोलने वाले कई गलतियाँ माफ़ कर देते हैं, पर यह नहीं।
DELF A1 and TCF reading sections mark a wrong accent as a spelling error. Accents in words you have to write — à, où, étude, communiqué — carry real marks. Good handwriting helps here more than it does in English.
DELF A1 और TCF के पठन अनुभाग में गलत मात्रा को वर्तनी त्रुटि माना जाता है। जिन शब्दों को लिखना होता है — à, où, étude, communiqué — उनमें मात्रा के अंक सचमुच मिलते हैं। यहाँ अंग्रेज़ी की तुलना में अच्छा हस्तलेख ज़्यादा काम आता है।
