Nouns, Articles & Gender A1

mon, ta, son and their plural forms replace the English apostrophe-s. The rules are short, but the exceptions (sa / son, de / du) appear constantly.

Nouns, Articles & Gender — Every noun has a gender, and the article must agree with it.

The full set

mon / ma / mes, ton / ta / tes, son / sa / ses, notre / nos, votre / vos, leur / leurs. They agree with the THING owned, not the owner: sa voiture = his car OR her car.

mon / ma / mes, ton / ta / tes, son / sa / ses, notre / nos, votre / vos, leur / leurs। ये उस वस्तु से मेल खाते हैं जो स्वामित्व में है, स्वामी से नहीं: sa voiture = उसकी कार, चाहे वह आदमी हो या औरत।

son, not sa, before a vowel

son replaces sa before a vowel or a silent h: son ami, son école, son homme. The s drops. This is not a misspelling — it is the rule.

Using le instead of du

"the book of my brother" is le livre de mon frère, and "the end of the film" is la fin du film — du, not *de le. The masculine singular is the only place the two words merge, and it merges every time.

"the book of my brother" है le livre de mon frère, और "the end of the film" है la fin du film — du, *de le नहीं। पुल्लिंग एकवचन ही वह जगह है जहाँ दोनों शब्द मिलते हैं, और वहाँ हमेशा मिलते हैं।

Pronounce the ending, not the gender

mon, ton and son all sound identical. So do mes, tes and ses. In speech the gender is invisible, which is exactly why the written forms trip people up. Write them out; the grammar stays out of the way in conversation.

mon, ton और son सब एक जैसे बोले जाते हैं। mes, tes और ses भी। बोलते समय लिंग सुनाई नहीं देता, और यही कारण है कि लिखित रूप लोगों को उलझाते हैं। इन्हें लिखकर सीखिए; बातचीत में व्याकरण हटा-फट्ट कर आगे बढ़ता है।
