Les articles définis

Nouns, Articles & Gender A1

le, la and les point at something already known. English drops this article entirely, which is the one place French beginners consistently under-translate.

Nouns, Articles & Gender — Every noun has a gender, and the article must agree with it.

Leçon

The three forms

le for masculine nouns, la for feminine nouns, les for both plurals. Before a vowel the masculine article loses its e: l'école, l'homme, l'ami.

पुल्लिंग संज्ञा के लिए le, स्त्रीलिंग के लिए la, और दोनों बहुवचन के लिए les। स्वर से पहले पुल्लिंग आर्टिकल अपनी e खो देता है: l'école, l'homme, l'ami।

Choosing le or la

Check the gender of the noun, not the object. If you cannot remember, use "c'est" or repeat the noun with its article — never invent one. Unhelpful guessing is what produces *la problème.

वस्तु का नहीं, संज्ञा का लिंग देखिए। याद न हो तो "c'est" का प्रयोग कीजिए या संज्ञा को उसके आर्टिकल के साथ दोहराइए — कभी अनुमान लगाकर आर्टिकल मत गढ़िए। लापरवाह अनुमान ही *la problème जैसी गलतियाँ पैदा करता है।

The definite article does not disappear

In English the article vanishes in the plural and before proper nouns: the books, France. In French it stays: les livres, la France. This is the single most reliable test of whether someone is really thinking in French.

अंग्रेज़ी में आर्टिकल बहुवचन में और उचित नामों के आगे गायब हो जाता है: the books, France। फ़्रेंच में वह रहता है: les livres, la France। यही सबसे भरोसेमंद जाँच है कि कोई वास्तव में फ़्रेंच में सोच रहा है या नहीं।

Everyday French

The definite article marks the general category, which English leaves bare: J'aime le football = I like football. J'aime les maths = I like maths. Without the article, "les maths" becomes a single specific school subject rather than the subject in general.

निश्चित आर्टिकल सामान्य श्रेणी दर्शाता है, जिसे अंग्रेज़ी खाली छोड़ देती है: J'aime le football = मुझे फ़ुटबॉल पसंद है। J'aime les maths = मुझे गणित पसंद है। आर्टिकल हटा दें, तो "les maths" सामान्य विषय के बजाय किसी एक विशेष विषय का नाम बन जाता है।

Leaving out the article

"I have a dog" becomes J'ai chien instead of J'ai un chien, and more often, "the problem" becomes problème instead of le problème. Uncountable English nouns — water, advice, bread — take a definite article in French: l'eau, le conseil, le pain.

"I have a dog" का *J'ai chien बनता है, J'ai un chien नहीं; और अधिक बार "the problem" का *problème बनता है, le problème नहीं। अंग्रेज़ी के न गिने जा सकने वाले शब्द — पानी, सलाह, रोटी — फ़्रेंच में निश्चित आर्टिकल लेते हैं: l'eau, le conseil, le pain।

Say the article every single time

For the first month, say "le" or "la" before every noun, even when it feels redundant. English-trained ears will think it is filler, and that is exactly the point — the article becomes automatic instead of something you remember to add under pressure.

पहले महीने हर संज्ञा से पहले "le" या "la" बोलिए, भले ही यह अनावश्यक लगे। अंग्रेज़ी से आई अवज़ों को यह भराव लगेगा, और यही मुख्य बात है — दबाव में याद रखने की चीज़ नहीं, आदत बन जाएगा।
