How the groups are named

The name is the ending without the final "r" of the infinitive: -er, -ir, -re. French calls them premier, deuxième and troisième groupe, and the numbers are traditional rather than meaningful.

नाम अनंत रूप के अंतिम "r" को हटाकर बनाया जाता है: -er, -ir, -re। फ़्रेंच में इन्हें पहला, दूसरा और तीसरा समूह कहते हैं, और ये क्रम पारंपरिक है, अर्थपूर्ण नहीं।

The three present-tense tables

Group 1 (-er): e, es, e, ons, ez, ent. Group 2 (-ir): is, is, it, issons, issez, issent. Group 3 (-re): s, s, —, ons, ez, ent. Read each row against parler, finir and vendre, and the pattern is obvious.

समूह 1 (-er): e, es, e, ons, ez, ent। समूह 2 (-ir): is, is, it, issons, issez, issent। समूह 3 (-re): s, s, —, ons, ez, ent। हर पंक्ति को parler, finir और vendre के साथ पढ़िए, ढर्रा तुरंत साफ़ हो जाएगा।

One table, three verbs

parler (group 1): je parle, nous parlons. finir (group 2): je finis, nous finissons. vendre (group 3): je vends, nous vendons. Each row of the table reproduces exactly across all three.

parler (समूह 1): je parle, nous parlons। finir (समूह 2): je finis, nous finissons। vendre (समूह 3): je vends, nous vendons। सारणी का हर अंत तीनों में ठीक वैसा ही दोहराता है।

Putting an -ir verb into group 1

Because finir ends in "ir", a learner writes *je finie by habit. And a handful of -ir verbs are not group 2 at all: partir, sortir, dormir and mourir behave like neither table, which is why they must be learned by heart.

क्योंकि finir के अंत में "ir" है, शिक्षार्थी आदत से *je finie लिख देता है। और कुछ -ir क्रियाएँ समूह 2 में हैं ही नहीं: partir, sortir, dormir और mourir किसी भी सारणी से नहीं मिलतीं, इसीलिए इन्हें रटना पड़ता है।

Look at the infinitive first

Whenever you meet a new verb in a dictionary, check the ending before anything else. A verb ending in -er, -ir or -re is already 90% solved; you only have to spot the exceptions, and there are far fewer of those than there are verbs.

शब्दकोश में कोई नई क्रिया मिले तो सबसे पहले उसका अंत देखिए। -er, -ir या -re पर समाप्त क्रिया पहले ही 90% हल हो चुकी होती है; बस अपवाद पहचानने रहते हैं, और अपवाद क्रियाओं से बहुत कम हैं।
