Usage & Register B1
Written French connects with connecteurs. Spoken French also marks WHERE you are in your own argument, and those markers are worth marks in an oral exam.
Usage & Register — Formal and informal French, false friends, common mistakes.
FIRST: d'abord, en premier lieu, pour commencer. THEN: ensuite, puis, par la suite. BUT: cependant, toutefois, and or — and it is the correct one here, because or means therefore, not but. IN MY VIEW: à mon avis, selon moi, à ce que je sais. TO SUM UP: pour conclure, en définitive, bref, en somme.
पहले: d'abord, en premier lieu, pour commencer. फिर: ensuite, puis, par la suite. पर: cependant, toutefois, और or — और यहाँ सही विकल्प or ही है, क्योंकि or का अर्थ है इसलिए, लेकिन नहीं। मेरी राय में: à mon avis, selon moi, à ce que je sais. निष्कर्ष में: pour conclure, en définitive, bref, en somme.
In a written exam, claiming that something is the best solution with no qualification sounds arrogant and scores lower. The graded forms are plus or moins plus an adjective: "C'est peut-être un peu plus coûteux, mais plus sûr." Similarly il me semble, à ce que je vois, je dirais, il est possible que. Hedges are not a way of avoiding an opinion — they are how a B1 speaker states one and still allows it to be discussed.
"C'est faux." is flat and sounds like an attack. "Je pense que c'est faux." is a position. "J'ai l'impression que ce n'est pas tout à fait faux." is a position you can discuss. In the third version the speaker has actually conceded something, and that is exactly what moves an oral candidate up a band.
"C'est faux." सीधा है और हमले जैसा लगता है। "Je pense que c'est faux." एक स्थिति है। "J'ai l'impression que ce n'est pas tout à fait faux." एक ऐसी स्थिति है जिस पर बहस हो सकती है। तीसरे रूप में वक्ता ने कुछ मान भी लिया, और यही मौखिक परीक्षक को अगली पट्टी तक ले जाता है।
English says "I think that he is right", so learners write "Je pense que il a raison" and then repair the grammar without repairing the sentence. The problem is not the extra il, which is a separate agreement rule, but the fact that que already fills that role. The same borrowing produces "Au lieu de je vais, je reste" and "Je believe que". Fix the structure once and these stop appearing.
अंग्रेज़ी में कहते हैं "I think that he is right", इसलिए शिक्षक लिखते हैं "Je pense que il a raison" और फिर व्याकरण ठीक करते हैं, वाक्य नहीं। समस्या बाहरी il नहीं है, वह अलग नियम है; समस्या यह है कि que पहले ही वह काम कर रहा है। यही उधार लेना "Au lieu de je vais, je reste" और "Je believe que" भी बनाता है। ढाँचा एक बार ठीक कीजिए, ये ग़लतियाँ बंद हो जाएंगी।
