Les registres de langue

Usage & Register C1

French marks its register far more openly than English: the same idea exists in a familier, a courant and a soutenu form, and choosing the wrong one is read as a bigger error than a grammar slip.

Usage & Register — Formal and informal French, false friends, common mistakes.

The three registers

Three registers run through the whole language: familier (spoken and relaxed — ouais, bosser, ça marche), courant (neutral — oui, travailler, c'est bon) and soutenu (formal, mostly written — certes, œuvrer, cela). One grammar point shifts with them: spoken French often drops the ne of negation, so "Je sais pas" is familier while "Je ne sais pas" is expected in any written register.

Same idea, three levels

familier: ça, ouais, bosser, bouffer, choper, y a. courant: c'est, oui, travailler, manger, prendre, il y a. soutenu: cela, certes, œuvrer, se sustenter, se procurer, il existe.

familier: ça, ouais, bosser, bouffer, choper, y a। courant: c'est, oui, travailler, manger, prendre, il y a। soutenu: cela, certes, œuvrer, se sustenter, se procurer, il existe।

The same question, three ways

Tu bosses demain ? / Va-t-il travailler demain ? / Ouais, ça marche. / Certes, cela convient.

Tu bosses demain ? / Va-t-il travailler demain ? / Ouais, ça marche. / Certes, cela convient. पहला और तीसरा वाक्य familier स्तर के हैं, दूसरा और चौथा soutenu।

The trap

The trap is mixing registers inside one piece of writing: a formal cover letter that suddenly says "y a pas de souci" reads as carelessness. Keep familier for dialogue and soutenu for argument, and never drop ne in a formal text.

फंदा यह है कि एक ही लेख में स्तर मिला दिए जाएँ: औपचारिक आवेदन-पत्र में अचानक "y a pas de souci" लिखना लापरवाही जैसा लगता है। संवाद के लिए familier और तर्क के लिए soutenu रखें, और औपचारिक पाठ में ne कभी न छोड़ें।

In the exam

TCF and DELF reading tasks deliberately mix registers; the question often asks who is speaking, and the register is the only clue given.

TCF और DELF के पठन अभ्यास जान-बूझकर स्तर मिलाते हैं; प्रश्न प्रायः पूछता है कि बोलने वाला कौन है, और स्तर ही अकेला संकेत होता है।

Questions d’entraînement

Q1. Quel verbe appartient au registre familier ?

कौन-सी क्रिया familier स्तर की है?

Réponse : bouffer

💡 bouffer est familier ; se sustenter et œuvrer sont soutenus, déguster est courant.

Q2. Choisissez la forme soutenue : « ___ ne me convient pas. »

soutenu रूप चुनिए: « ___ ne me convient pas. »

Réponse : Cela

💡 Cela appartient au registre soutenu ; ça, c' et y a sont familiers.

Q3. Rendez cette phrase neutre (courant) : « Ouais, ça marche. »

इस वाक्य को तटस्थ (courant) बनाइए: « Ouais, ça marche. »

Réponse : Oui, c'est bon.

💡 Le registre courant remplace ouais par oui et ça marche par c'est bon, sans garder de marque familière.
