Tenses & Aspect B2
A narrator in French stands OUTSIDE the story. That is why the same event can be told with passé composé or with imparfait and mean two different things.
Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.
PASSÉ COMPOSÉ = the event itself, what the narrator puts on the stage: "Il est entré et il a crié." IMPARFAIT = the scenery around it: "Il est entré et criait." The second does not mean he shouted less; it means the shouting was already the state of the scene when he entered. TCF marks this distinction precisely because it is a way of structuring information, not of describing time.
PASSÉ COMPOSÉ = घटना स्वयं, जो कथाकार मंच पर रखता है: "Il est entré et il a crié."
PASSÉ COMPOSÉ for the event. IMPARFAIT for the scene. PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT for what had already happened before the scene began: "Quand je suis arrivé, la réunion avait commencé." FUTUR/CONDITIONNEL for what the narrator did not know at the time and reveals now: "Il partirait le lendemain, et je ne le savais pas." Mixing these is how a story acquires its depth, and misusing them is how it loses it.
Each adds a different layer: event, atmosphere, sequence, and the narrator's ignorance at the time.
"Je travaillais dans cette entreprise" implies the job may still be running or is simply a stretch of life. If the job is finished and closed, the passé composé is required: "J'ai travaillé dans cette entreprise pendant cinq ans." The imperfect states what WAS true; it does not claim the reader should imagine it continuing. The exam penalises the difference, because it is the difference between describing and narrating.
« Soudain, la porte s'ouvrit » में passé simple क्यों?
Q3. Mettez au passé simple : il part → il ___.
passé simple में कीजिए: il part → il ___.
